Antonio Lauro (1917-1986) was a Venezuelan musician and a renowned composer for the guitar. His father, an Italian immigrant, was a barber who would sing and play the guitar. He taught his son what we could before he died when Antonio was still a child. Antonio Lauro later pursued formal musical study (piano, composition) where the composer Vincente Emilio Sojo (1887-1874) was one of his teachers. . After a 1932 concert performed in Caracas by Agustin Barrios (the Paraguayan guitarist and composer), the young Lauro was so impressed, that he abandoned the piano and violin in favor of the guitar. . He later studied with Raul Borges and was introduced to the classical guitar repertoire. Borges' pupils would also include Rodrigo Riera, Jose Rafael Cisneros and Alirio Diaz. These colleagues were later responsible for unveiling Lauro's works to an international audience, introducing these unheard works to Andres Segovia, Leo Brouwer and John Willians. . Like many South Americans of his generation, Lauro was a fervent cultural nationalist, determined to rescue and celebrate his nation's musical heritage. . Hope you enjoyed the piece! Takashi Ogawa was born in Japan in 1960 and throughout his years, became internationally acclaimed as a classical guitarist and composer. in 1981 he partook in the Master Class of Andres Segovia in Granada. He is the winner of many international contests and his works are frequently used in music conservatories and contests. Although most of his pieces are written for guitar, he has many combinations of chamber and orchestral music. . I was first introduced to this piece by my guitar teacher, Buzz Gravelle. Amelia's Will - a Catalonian folk song arranged by Miguel Llobet (1878 - 1938) This song carries a sad and unusual story... . The lyrics of this song tell the story of a young girl who has found out that her husband has been unfaithful - with her own mother! Ouch. There are several endings to the story in which she either commits suicide, is poisoned by her mother or dies in sorrow and painful agony. To her, their treachery is worse than death. Her will (testament) is written on her deathbed with the final instructions allowing the two to be together. . Llobet skillfully captures the sense of sorrow in his guitar arrangement. Llobet was one of Tarrega's most distinguished pupils. This piece is the first of many arrangements of Catalonian folksongs often referred to as Llobet's "Canciones Populares Catalanas". . Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was a German composer and musician of the late Baroque period. This Prelude is part of a 7 movement Cello Suite in G major written between 1717-23. . Bach wrote a total of 6 cello suites, each with 7 movements. This is the best known movement from the entire set. They are considered some of Bach's greatest achievements. . In a usual Baroque-era musical suite, it begins with a prelude. After the prelude comes the allemande, courante, sarabande, two Galanteries (minuets, bourees or gavottes) and a final gigue. These are all types of baroque style dances. . Aguinaldo is folk genre of Christmas music in several Latin American countries. In Venezuela, aguinaldos are often performed by "parrandas"or "aguinalderos"- a casual group of people, often family or friends who merrily go from house to house singing and playing. In exchange for the entertainment, parranderos"are traditionally given food and drink. . Vicente Emilio Sojo is considered as the pioneer and of the modern school of Venezuelan music. Sojo’s compositions include a quantity of choral music, a string quartet (1913), and many guitar pieces. He also collected together a considerable amount of Venezuelan traditional songs and dances. . Another Tarrega classic. I remember learning this one in my earlier years of classical guitar study. Each time I revisit it, I always seem to learn something new. This piece is a mazurka, a Polish waltz accenting beat 2. Tarrega’s "Adelita", “Lagrima” and the anonymous “Romance” are simple, yet excellent pieces for guitarist of any level.

Lágrima (teardrop) - a romantic prelude composed by Spanish guitarist Francisco Tarrega in 1891. It is said he composed this after the death of his young daughter. This is one of his most well known pieces.
